Dick Whittington travels from Gloucester with his cat Thomas, to find his fortune in London. He meets Alice Fitzwarren, who persuades her father to give Dick a job in his shop. The rats of London don't like cats. They steal money from Alderman Fitzwarren and make sure Dick is blamed and dismissed in disgrace. Determined to prove his innocence, with the help of Sarah the Cook and Idle Jack, Dick joins the crew of Captain Cluck's ship on a voyage to the Barbary Coast. The evil leader of the rats causes the ship to sink. Dick and his companions survive only to be brought before the all-powerful Sheikh Yaboddi. He is in an unforgiving mood because his country is overrun with rats. Dick's feline friend saves the day; the adventurers are amply rewarded and return with their reputations restored. Along the way there is song, dance and a massive helping of laughter.

Theatre Royal presents - Trial by Laughter

Time: 7:45pm
Where: New Road BN1 1SD
Town: Brighton
Email:
Phone: 0844 871 7615

Following critical acclaim for The Wipers Times, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman have once again taken inspiration from real life events for their new play Trial by Laughter.

William Hone, the forgotten hero of free speech, was a bookseller, publisher and satirist. In 1817, he stood trial for ‘impious blasphemy and seditious libel’. The only crime he had committed was to be funny. Worse than that he was funny by parodying religious texts. And worst of all, he was funny about the despotic government and the libidinous monarchy.

A Watermill Theatre production.

Please note: Tuesday 20 November includes a post-show talk with Ian Hislop and Nick Newman. Admittance will be allowed for anyone who has a valid ticket for any performance of Trial By Laughter.

Jodie Prenger leads the cast in this groundbreaking comedy classic.

Beverly and husband Laurence are throwing a party for their newlywed neighbours, Tony and Angela. Joining them is highly strung Susan who’s been banished from the party of her teenage daughter Abigail. Welcome to 1970’s suburbia and its heady mix of free-flowing cocktails, classic disco and cheese and pineapple sticks. As tensions rise and tempers flare the sheen of respectability is torn away by the warring couples with hilarious and potentially disastrous consequences.

Mike Leigh’s iconic Abigail’s Party is one of Britain’s most celebrated comedies; beloved by audiences, it thrills and delights in equal measure.
